ESL Grammar: RELATIVE CLAUSES (3) – where/when/whose

In this ESL grammar lesson, students learn to use relative clauses with the words “where/when/whose.” After learning these concepts, students practice writing where/when/whose in the blanks of a short story.

ESL Grammar: What are Relative Clauses?

Relative clauses are dependent clauses that provide additional information about a noun. They often begin with a relative pronoun, such as “where,” “when,” or “whose,” and help to create complex sentences.

Relative Pronouns: Where, When, Whose

  1. Where:
    • Used to refer to a place.
    • Example: This is the house where I grew up.
  2. When:
    • Used to refer to a time.
    • Example: Do you remember the day when we first met?
  3. Whose:
    • Used to show possession, referring to people or things.
    • Example: She is the artist whose paintings are in the gallery.
