ESL Grammar: What Are Adverbs?
Adverbs are words that modify or describe verbs, adjectives, or other adverbs. When adverbs modify verbs, they tell us more about how, when, where, or to what extent an action occurs.
Examples of Adverbs Modifying Verbs:
- Quickly: She runs quickly.
- Carefully: He paints carefully.
- Tomorrow: They will leave tomorrow.
- Outside: The kids played outside.
The English grammar lesson below introduces adverbs that modify verbs in a clear and simple manner that is easy for beginner or intermediate English learners to understand. Our series of ESL grammar lessons on subjects and verbs introduce these concepts and reinforce them through helpful and instructive exercises.
