ESL Grammar: COMPARATIVE ADJECTIVES (6) – “more + adjective”

This ESL grammar lesson teaches students when to use “adjective + -er” and when to use “more adjective,” followed by a short quiz to reinforce the lesson.

ESL Grammar: What is a Comparative Adjective?

Comparative adjectives are used to compare two nouns, showing how one differs from the other in terms of a particular quality. For longer adjectives (usually two or more syllables), we use “more” before the adjective to make comparisons.

Structure:

  • More + Adjective + Than

Examples:

  • BeautifulMore beautiful: This painting is more beautiful than that one.
  • InterestingMore interesting: The movie is more interesting than the book.

ESL Grammar: When to Use “More + Adjective + Than”

  1. For Adjectives with Two or More Syllables: Use “more” before the adjective to form the comparative.
    • BeautifulMore beautiful
    • InterestingMore interesting

The beginner-level grammar lesson below introduces the concept of comparative adjectives (more + adjective) in a clear and simple manner to help young ESL learners to understand this concept.
