ESL Grammar - Parts of Speech

ESL Grammar: SUBJECTS AND VERBS (2) – Review of Subjects

This ESL grammar lesson focuses on the subjects of sentences, with a short review worksheet in which students practice writing subjects in the blanks of various sentences.

Understanding the subject in a sentence is a fundamental step in learning English. The subject tells us who or what the sentence is about. This guide will help beginners identify and use subjects correctly in sentences.

ESL Grammar: What is a Subject?

A subject is the person, place, thing, or idea that performs the action or is described in the sentence. It is usually a noun or pronoun.

Examples:

  • Anna reads books. (Anna is the subject)
  • The dog barks loudly. (The dog is the subject)
  • It is raining. (It is the subject)

ESL Grammar: Identifying the Subject

To find the subject in a sentence, ask yourself, “Who or what is this sentence about?”

Examples:

  • John is running. (Who is running? John is running.)
  • The car is fast. (What is fast? The car is fast.)

The beginner-level grammar lesson below introduces the concepts of subjects and verbs in a clear and simple manner to help young ESL learners to understand this concept.
