ESL Grammar: What is a Subject?

The subject is the person, place, thing, or idea that the sentence is about. It performs the action or is described by the verb.

Examples:

  • Lisa dances. (Lisa is the subject)
  • The dog barks. (The dog is the subject)
  • Water flows. (Water is the subject)

ESL Grammar: What is a Verb?

A verb expresses an action or a state of being. It tells what the subject is doing or what condition the subject is in.

Examples:

  • Lisa dances. (dances is the action verb)
  • The dog barks. (barks is the action verb)
  • Water flows. (flows is the action verb)
