ESL Grammar: SUPERLATIVE ADJECTIVES (3) – most

In this ESL grammar lesson, students learn to use “-est” with shorter adjectives and “most” with longer adjectives, followed by a review quiz to practice writing several superlative adjectives correctly.

ESL Grammar: What are Superlative Adjectives?

Superlative adjectives are used to compare three or more nouns and highlight the highest or lowest degree of a particular quality. They help us express which noun stands out as the most or least in terms of a certain attribute.

Structure of Superlative Adjectives:

  • Adjective + -est + (of/in) + Noun(s)
    • Example: TallTallest: She is the tallest of the group.
  • Most + Adjective + (of/in) + Noun(s)
    • Example: BeautifulMost beautiful: This painting is the most beautiful in the gallery.

The English grammar lesson below introduces the superlative adjective structure “most + adjective” in a clear and simple manner that is easy for beginner or intermediate English learners to understand. Our series of ESL grammar lessons on subjects and verbs introduce these concepts and reinforce them through helpful and instructive exercises.

This lesson is available for free download, and you can download many more English grammar lessons focusing on all different parts of speech (nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs and lots more!) in our comprehensive, beginner-level ESL grammar textbook Great, Great Grammar! (Book 1: Parts of Speech).
