ESL Grammar: PRESENT CONTINUOUS TENSE (2) – “be” verbs

In this ESL grammar worksheet, students must fill in the blanks with a suitable “be verb” to complete each present continuous (present progressive) sentence.

ESL Grammar: Forming the Present Continuous Tense with “Be” Verbs

To form the present continuous tense, you need to use the appropriate form of the verb “to be” (am, is, are) followed by the base verb + -ing.

Structure:

  • Affirmative: Subject + am/is/are + verb + -ing
    • I am eating.
    • He/She/It is eating.
    • We/You/They are eating.

The English grammar lesson below focuses on how to use “be” verbs in forming the present continuous tense, in a clear and simple manner that is easy for beginner English learners to understand. Our series of ESL grammar lessons on subjects and verbs introduce these concepts and reinforce them through helpful and instructive exercises.
