Because vs. Although

“Because” and “Although” have almost opposite meanings.

Examples:

  • Because it was raining, I decided not to walk to work.
  • Although it was raining, I decided to walk to work.
  • Because he likes animals, Brian’s parents got him a cat for his birthday.
  • Although he likes animals, Brian’s parents won’t let him have a pet.
  • Although the Ferrari is very expensive, I think I’m going to buy it.
  • Because the Ferrari is so expensive, I decided not to buy it.

 

Read the sentences below. Write “Because” or “Although” in the blanks. Read the whole sentence and decide which one makes the most sense.

  1. ____________ I was late, I didn’t miss anything important.
  2. ____________ I was late, I missed the beginning of the movie.
  3. ____________ Mark never does his homework, he does poorly on tests.
  4. ____________ Christina eats lots of fruits and vegetables, she is very healthy.
  5. ____________ my dog is kind of ugly, I love him very much.

  8. ____________ John is a famous author, he often forgets how to spell words.
